Autumn 2009
Michael Ward presented with Yorkshire Sword
Michael Ward was presented with the Yorkshire Sword at the county championships on Sunday 6th June 2009. This was in recognition of all his hard work for Yorkshire's archers over a number of years.
The citation nominating Michael reads:
The YAA Coaching Group and Barnsley Archery Club would like to nominate Michael Ward for the award of the Yorkshire Sword.
Michael is now a member of Selby Archery Club but is better known for his long association with the University of York. This year has seen him take on a wide range of responsibilities and achieve a number of goals in his support of Yorkshire archery and regional/national promotion of the sport through his role as University archery liaison for YAA and NCAS, following the role he has had with BUSA. He has played a strong role in developing University archery for some time, working with BUSA and the NEUAL shoots as organiser and supporting a number of Universities in organising shoots in the University calendar.
Michael has passed his County Coach exam this year, consolidating the work he has been doing in coaching. He is involved with both Yorkshire Youth/Junior squads as a coach, and the senior squad as a coach/archer. His commitment has been high. At Selby he has already introduced regular coaching days and is supporting archers of all disciplines in improving their performance.
Michael has now completed his Level 1 tutor and assessor training, and Level 2 tutor/course manager. Over the past year he has led and tutored a University-specific Level 1 coach training course involving Leeds, Sheffield and York Universities with another planned this year, increasing the number of Universities accessing this. Interest is now developing across the region, and some student candidates are progressing to level 2 and beyond.
In supporting the YAA Coaching Group, Michael has taken on the role of Treasurer, introducing a rigorous system of budget management and ensuring that we have a clear picture of our finances and costs. In doing this, he led the request (with Harry Drake) for support from YAA general funds for the squads, and we have been grateful for the support received. This year he has also attended development conferences for coaching for YAA and also the recent GNAS SDP conference for NCAS.
Michael works hard at whatever he takes on, is always supportive, and we feel he is a good role model for the sport and the county, and a worthy recipient of this award.

Northern Counties Coaching Conference
The NCAS Coaching Conference took place on the 23rd of May. It was Yorkshire's turn to host, and Barnsley Archery Club acted as our excellent hosts for the day.
Kath Fitzpatrick welcomed 37 coaches to the conference. Every one of the five Northern Counties - Cheshire, Cumbria, Durham & Northumberland, Lancashire and Yorkshire - was well represented.
Tom Musgrove made a presentation that gave the attendees a better understanding of back tension ("Muscular Patterns Within a Closed Cyclic Sport - Archery Movements Explained").
Helen George gave a presentation on coaching archers with disabilities and medical conditions, drawing on her extensive experience with the GB Paralympic squad.
Beverley de Toeuf talked about archery injuries and their causes. After the excellent buffet lunch laid on by Jean Clarkson, Beverley continued with her presentation, switching the focus to the prevention of injuries through specific exercises.
Mick Fitzpatrick explained how a compound bow works, then showed us how to set up a bow and perform the initial tuning.
Kath Fitzpatrick discussed the coaching of compound archers and juniors, shooting down many misconceptions.
After a question and answer session, Kath wrapped up a very productive and informative event.
County tournaments
The NCAS/YAA Single FITA, held at Wetherby on the 6th of June, somehow dodged the torrential rain that was lashing the rest of the county.

The YAA Championships on the 7th of June similarly stayed dry, though there was a tricky wind. Michael Ward was presented with the Yorkshire Sword, and Stan Snow was presented with a decanter to mark his retirement as a judge.

The NCAS/YAA Double FITA on the 4th and 5th of July enjoyed sunshine, and thankfully we were able to complete both days. One day had been lost in each of the previous two years to extreme weather.

Sale of used YAA Bosses
For the last few years the YAA have sold off a few used target bosses, usually after 3 or 4 years use at the YAA Outdoor Tournaments. They plan to continue with this over the next few years.
This year the requests from clubs has far exceeded the number of bosses available.
Previously there has been no firm policy about how clubs would be allocated, usually first come first served, so the Committee have now agreed the following policy, which becomes effective from this year.
Arrangements
Before March each year, the numbers of bosses to be sold that year and the cost of each boss will be agreed by the committee, and published on the website and in the Newsletter.
Requests from clubs (e-mail or letter) will be accepted by the YAA Secretary, from 1st April each year, and will be dealt with in order of receipt.
No waiting list will be carried forward.
A maximum of 5 bosses per club will be allocated, up to the number agreed for sale. Additional bosses may be offered if the requests do not total the number for sale.
To ensure all clubs have an equal opportunity to purchase, and under normal circumstances, each club being offered bosses will not be offered bosses again within the next 5 years, unless all bosses are not allocated.
Collection will be from Wetherby during the Double FITA weekend.
Dave Phillips, YAA Secretary
New regional judge
Congratulations to Amanda Bartram, who passed her Regional Judge assessment at the NCAS/YAA Double FITA at Wetherby on Saturday the 4th of July 2009.

Requests for second-hand YAA bosses from two clubs were approved. Several clubs had to be turned down. The need for a policy was discussed, and a draft policy was agreed.
The policy on disabled archers remaining on the line at the YAA indoor championships was discussed, and the existing policy confirmed.
Some sponsorship was pledged to two archers who may be selected to represent the country abroad, in the event of them not being fully funded by GNAS.
YAA standing orders and decisions dating back to 2000 have been identified. These will be made available on the website in due course.
Stocks of enamel YAA badges are low. Additional supplies will be obtained.

The Yorkshire Award
THE YORKSHIRE AWARD is a prestigious award where clubs can nominate individuals or couples who, in the eyes of their club, deserve recognition for services to that particular club.
There is no set deadline for submission of nominations.
If you think someone in your club deserves such recognition, please download the nomination form from the website, complete it, and send it to the county secretary.
Yorkshire Award Nomination and Citation Form
Judges expenses form
The Judges Confirmation and Expense Form was designed following comments made by a number of judges.
The tournament organiser or club secretary should send the form to the judge well in advance of the event. The judge should return the confirmation of attendance and expected expenses, so matters can be settled in advance of the event.
To prevent double booking of Judges, the Judges Confirmation and Expense Form includes a tear off slip to send to Karen Winsett, the Judges Liaison Officer, when the booking has been confirmed. The form can be downloaded as a Word document from the YAA website:
