Autumn 2010

Susan Heritage

Susan Heritage, a well-known and well-liked Yorkshire archer, died on Friday the 30th of July 2010. She had been fighting cancer for some time.

Susan was a long-standing member of the YAA committee, edited this newsletter for many years, and was one of the founder members of Adwalton Moor Archers.

The YAA sends its sincere condolences and deepest sympathies to her husband Dennis, and to her friends and relations.

Annual returns 2010-2011

Archery GB (the Grand National Archery Society) is in the process of introducing a new membership system, which will allow annual returns and other membership processes to be performed online. As an interim measure, a new paper-based annual returns process has been introduced for 2010-2011.

This interim process has several potential causes of confusion. To assist clubs, the YAA website now carries a page of information intended to clarify this year's renewal process. We ask that club secretaries and/or membership secretaries read the page carefully before performing the annual returns.

Rebate to clubs

Over the last few years, the YAA has built up its funds from almost nothing to a very healthy level. This has allowed us to make a one-off rebate to clubs. YAA-affiliated clubs should by now have received a cheque for 50% of the amount they paid to the YAA at the last subscription renewal. We hope this money has proved useful.

A letter from the County Treasurer Dave Phillips was included with the rebate and is available to read on the YAA website.

Representing the county

The YAA is inviting archers to submit scores to the County Team Manager, Michelle Kiddy, for selection to the county's senior and junior teams for the Inter-Counties shoots. Score submission forms are available from the Shooting page of the YAA website.

Upcoming tournaments

The YAA Longbow Championships 2010 will be hosted by Chantry Bowmen of Rotherham on Saturday the 14th of August. Gentlemen will shoot a two-way York and ladies will shoot a two-way Double National.
YAA Senior & Junior Longbow Championships

The YAA Field Championships 2010 will be hosted by Dearne Valley Archery Club at their new Savin Royd Woods ground near Woolley. A marked FITA 24 round will be shot on Saturday the 23rd of October.
YAA Senior & Junior Field Championships 2010

The National Clout Championships 2010 will take place at Rawdon Meadows in Bradford, home of Bronte Archers, on Saturday the 16th of October. This will be the third time Bronte Archers have hosted these championships. 2008 and 2009 were very good shoots, and we're sure this year's will be a similar success.

Cancelled tournaments

Two tournaments due to be held in August 2010 have been cancelled owing to circumstances beyond the control of the host clubs.

Harvester Archers have had to cancel their popular Open Western, which was scheduled for the 8th of August.

The debut clout shoot of Greenman Archers, scheduled for the 15th of August, has been cancelled because of problems with their ground.

Ann Shooter awarded the Yorkshire Sword

Ann Shooter of White Rose Archers was presented with the Yorkshire Sword at the 2010 Championships. Ann has been a great contributor to Yorkshire archery over the years - she organised the Yorkshire longbow championships for nine years and sat on the YAA committee for many years. The award of the sword was in recognition of this long service and particularly her sterling efforts in making sure the 2009 championships were a success.

The sword was presented to Ann by YAA Vice President Christine Morgan and YAA Secretary Andy Wilkinson on Sunday the 6th of June 2010.

The citation reads:

In 2009 Ann worked tirelessly to keep the Yorkshire Longbow Championships alive after a disastrous 2008 when the shoot was rained off.
The shoot organisation started in early March by ensuring that a field was available, the Judges were applied for, and entry forms were ready. Nearly every weekend after, Ann was attending shoots in and out of the County encouraging archers to come to the Championships which this year had a record attendance. A shoot does not end there, as all the score sheets need to be checked and results sent out, along with the printing of the record book. This year, after 9 years, Ann has passed the Tournament over to another organiser knowing that it is now a thriving Yorkshire Longbow Tournament. But for Ann’s dedication to Yorkshire archery, we could have lost a Yorkshire tournament.

Jim's service

Jim Routledge's funeral service took place at Rawdon Crematorium in Leeds on Wednesday the 19th of May. There was a very good turnout - around 120 people crammed into the small chapel.

20 to 30 people brought longbows and stood around the sides of the chapel, forming a guard of honour for their fallen companion.

This quietly moving service was a good send-off for a popular man.

Successes for Yorkshire archers

The last few months have seen a striking number of great performances by Yorkshire archers.

Danielle Brown affirmed her position as one of the country's top compound shooters and the world's top Paralympic compound shooter. She's been selected to represent England in the Commonwealth Games, and is thought to be the first disabled athlete to represent England in an able-bodied event at the Commonwealth Games. Shortly after her selection, she won the Ladies Compound category at the European Grand Prix tournament at Stoke Mandeville. She then went on to set a new Paralympic world record of 1406 on a Ladies FITA round at the Andover & Old Basing Double FITA Star. This superb score has guaranteed her a place in the finals of the Archery GB National Series.

Younger sister Georgina Brown became national Junior Ladies Compound champion in early July, helping the county to win the team compound prize. She then went on to win bronze at the European Junior Championships in Winnenden, Germany. At the Andover & Old Basing Double FITA Star she finished eighth overall in Ladies Compound, and was the highest scoring junior. Her score of 2726 for the Double Ladies FITA is a new junior national record.

Michelle Kiddy of Dearne Valley AC won the Ladies Recurve title at the British Field Archery Championships, which were held at Pentref in South Wales at the end of May.

Amy Oliver of Dearne Valley AC has been selected to represent England at the Commonwealth Games, as part of the Ladies Recurve team. She took silver at the Andover & Old Basing Double FITA Star, and at the time of writing is well positioned to take the remaining Ladies Recurve place at the final of the Archery GB National Series.

Her mum Lynda Oliver continues to put in tournament-winning scores, and has been selected to represent England in Ladies Compound at the British Target Championships in August.

Mark Farrow of the Company of Scorton Archers has also been selected to represent England at the British Target Championships, shooting recurve. He celebrated his selection by winning the Grand Northern Archery Meeting.

Joe Fairburn of the Bowmen of Adel continues to shoot excellent scores and is undoubtedly the best Yorkshire archer in his age group. He retained the Northern Counties Under 10 Junior Winter Postal League, setting a new PB.

The YAA extends its congratulations to all these archers and wishes them well for their upcoming events.

CRB forms replaced

From the 20 July 2010, the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) is no longer accepting the original style white CRB application forms with black typed question boxes. If you have one of these forms, you should destroy it and contact Archery GB for a copy of the new form, which is colour coded. If a white form is sent to Archery GB, it will be returned with a blank copy of the new form.

NCAS/YAA Open FITA Star & Metrics 2010

The Single FITA was held at Wetherby on Saturday the 5th of June. A large field of archers enjoyed hot conditions with a slight breeze. The senior recurve titles were snatched by raiders from Rochdale, but Yorkshire archers took the golds in senior compound. Curiously, the team results were the other way round.

D&DAA Animal Field shoot

The Doncaster & District Archery Association's annual field championships will be hosted by Dearne Valley AC on Sunday the 14th of November 2010. These will be at DVAC's new course in Savin Royd Woods, near Woolley, close to junction 38 of the M1. The shoot is a modified Big Game round using a mixture of 3D animal models, paper faces, and painted hessian faces. All distances are unmarked - that may sound daunting if you've not shot field before, but it's really nothing to be scared of. And you don't need to be a member of a D&DAA club, just a member of the GNAS.

There are three pegs at each target - red (furthest), blue (nearer) and white (nearest). You start by shooting an arrow from the red peg. If that fails to score in either the kill zone or the wound zone, you shoot another arrow from the blue peg. If that fails to score, you shoot a final arrow from the white peg. You stop shooting at a target as soon as you score. Points are scored as follows:

 First-arrow kill: 20 points
 First-arrow wound: 16 points
 Second-arrow kill: 14 points
 Second-arrow wound: 10 points
 Third-arrow kill: 8 points
 Third-arrow wound: 4 points

Your arrows must be numbered with distinctive bands and shot in order. This helps where you're not certain that a score has been made and you shoot another - the bands will tell you and your target companions which scoring arrow was shot earliest.

Since this is an unmarked round, no photography by competitors is allowed. This is because cameras can be used as range-finding devices.

Below is my report from last year's shoot.

The weather forecasters conned a load of us into the woods at High Melton on Sunday 8th November, for the Doncaster & District Archery Association's Field Championships 2009. I'm not affiliated to the D&DAA in any way, but visitors are welcome at this shoot. Despite the weather, I couldn't understand why people would be indoors shooting yet another Portsmouth when they could have been shooting a Big Game round in a lovely bit of woodland.
Perishingly cold to start with, topped off with a heavy downpour as shooting got underway. Why wasn't I indoors shooting a nice cosy Portsmouth? The rain absolutely bucketed down, drenching everyone and everything for about an hour. It eased up when the whistle went at 11:00 AM for the two-minute silence. After that the rain disappeared, the air warmed up and the day turned gorgeously autumnal. We wandered through an enchanted misty woodland full of golden leaves, freaky fungi, big cats and bears.
The targets were a mix of paper faces, hessian faces and 3Ds. Our first target had three parrots, and instructions to shoot one arrow at each - the red parrot to be shot from the red peg, the blue parrot to be shot from the blue peg, and the white parrot to be shot from the white peg. I wounded them all for a hefty 48 points start, yippee!
What we thought was a roast duck turned out to be a scary 3D bat. The rats were huge and fierce, almost Glaswegian, but despite an awkward angle I kebabbed them first arrow both times round - woof! Getting a first-arrow kill is way more of a kick than shooting a gold.
Total score of 508. Taking out the extra scoring opportunities on the parrots, this would be 456 on a standard Big Game round. This was enough to win me the Gents Recurve Visitor title. The fact that I was the only Gents Recurve Visitor may have helped, but in any case I was third-highest Gents Recurve scorer.
Brilliant shoot, well organised and with a great atmosphere. Many thanks to Dearne Valley Archery Club and the Doncaster & District Archery Association.

Barebow records for target rounds

If you shoot barebow (or if you just want to grab a few county records), you may be interested to know that all county barebow records for outdoor and indoor target rounds are vacant. No YAA-affiliated archer, as far as we can tell, has ever claimed a county record for a target round shot with a barebow. Now that barebow is recognised for classifications and handicaps in target archery, we will recognise this bow style for record purposes.

Please bear in mind that we will only accept record claims for rounds shot at open tournaments or record status closed shoots. We do not accept claims for rounds shot at club days or non-record status closed shoots. The claim form can be downloaded from the YAA website, and must be submitted to Andrew Neal together with the results from the tournament.

The Yorkshire Award

THE YORKSHIRE AWARD is a prestigious award where clubs can nominate individuals or couples who, in the eyes of their club, deserve recognition for services to that particular club.

There is no set deadline for submission of nominations.

If you think someone in your club deserves such recognition, please download the nomination form from the website, complete it, and send it to the county secretary.

Judges expenses form

The Judges Confirmation and Expense Form was designed following comments made by a number of judges.

The tournament organiser or club secretary should send the form to the judge well in advance of the event. The judge should return the confirmation of attendance and expected expenses, so matters can be settled in advance of the event.

To prevent double booking of Judges, the Judges Confirmation and Expense Form includes a tear off slip to send to Karen Winsett, the Judges Liaison Officer, when the booking has been confirmed. The form can be downloaded as a Word document from the YAA website:

Judges confirmation and expense form (Word format)

Alternatively, write to the County Secretary or phone him for a copy.

If you want particular judges, please write their names on the slip that is to be sent to Karen.

Many thanks for your anticipated support.
