Winter 2011
GNAS National Clout Championships 2011

Archers from all over the UK descended on Apperley Bridge on the 15th of October, as Bronte Archers once more hosted the GNAS National Clout Championships. Andrew Neal was the Tournament Organiser.
The day was spot on for clout, with many personal bests being shot - 14 Tassel Awards were claimed. Among those Tassel Awards was the first Purple Tassel for Lady Recurve, awarded to Cherry Lyne of the Bowmen of the Deans.
Yorkshire archers did well. Neil Crickmore won Gents Recurve, Adrian Hayes won Gents Longbow, Ethan Taylor won Junior Boys Compound, Tom Woolley won Junior Boys Longbow, and St George's were Barebow Club Team Champions. Marina Rose, Carol Fairbrother, Jean Horwood, Mark Hayes, Mick Winsett, Benjamin Daniel and Joseph Wallace were all in the medals.
Tournament organiser role
Andrew Neal will be stepping down as the YAA's Target Tournament Organiser at the 2013 AGM. He will by that time have spent 20 years in the role.
Andrew's service to the county has been outstanding, and he will be a hard act to follow.
The YAA is therefore looking for people interested in taking over the role. The long notice period means that interested people can shadow Andrew as he organises the county's 2012 shoots, and thus learn the ins and outs of the role.
The Target Tournament Organiser manages the Single FITA and Championships in June, the Double FITA in July and the Indoor Tournament in March. Every five years they also organise the Grand Northern in July and the Inter-Counties in October which rotate around the five mainland Northern Counties. The role will also encompass the management of the YAA bosses and other equipment, and management of the field parties for the outdoor tournaments.
We need to have a new organiser in place by the autumn of 2012 at the latest. If you wish to take on this important role, please get in touch as soon as possible.

The Yorkshire Sword
The Yorkshire Sword, presented in memory of Eric Strickland and Phil Simpson, shall be awarded annually to the Yorkshire Archer (that is, an affiliated member of the Association) who, in the opinion of the Clubs and Committee Members of the Association, has made the greatest service to archery in Yorkshire in the previous year (2011).
Nominations for the Yorkshire Sword, from Yorkshire clubs only, are to be received by the YAA Secretary, in writing, no later than 31st December 2011. All nominations must be supported by a citation. I have sent nomination papers to all the clubs.
Please think about nominating someone for this award through your club. Who has made the greatest contribution to archery in Yorkshire this year?

Club changes
Aardwolf Archers is a new club in Mosborough, Sheffield.
aardwolfarchers.blogspot.com
Bridlington Archers have changed their name to Archers of Bridlington and Burton Agnes. Their website remains the same for the moment, but eventually they will change the address to one that matches the new name.
Judge achievements
Richard Breese has been upgraded to a full International Judge. Richard will be judging at the London 2012 Paralympics, will be the Official Scorer at the Olympic archery at Lords, and will be judging at the Paralympic test event in May 2012. He comments that he'll have a busy year of international archery without even leaving the country!
Mark Hayes passed his Regional Assessment at Shotton on the 17th of September 2011 and is now a Regional Judge.
Amanda Bartram became a National Judge on the 29th of October 2011. This is fitting recognition of all the hard work Amanda has put into her judging work over many years.
Congratulations to Amanda, Mark and Richard.
Andy Arnold achieves Senior Coach qualification
Andy Arnold passed his final examination for the grade of Senior Coach, and is now the welldeserving holder of this high qualification. This is equivalent to a Level 4 Coach.
Many of the archers Andy coaches have been achieving great things this year, with several cracking Master Bowman for the first time.
Bronte trophies
Bronte Archers have a large number of unreturned trophies in the wild. At September's Back-End Westerns, the club only had the team trophies and the Jack & Jill trophies available for this year's winners - no other trophies were returned.
Lez Newsome (Bronte President) asks anyone who has a Bronte trophy that they won before 2011 to return it to him at Aardvark Archery, please, so they can be passed to this year's winners.

Winter Field Archery League
The Winter Field Archery League (WFAL) will be running again this season. The WFAL is a national challenge organised by Shaun and Heather Duggan of Horsham Archers, Sussex. Its aim is to keep field archery going during the winter months.
The WFAL is based on scores achieved on 12-target marked FITA field rounds.
For the first time, Yorkshire will be staging WFAL shoots. Dearne Valley Archery Club will host shoots at its Savin Royd Wood ground on the 18th of December 2011, the 15th of January 2012, the 19th of February 2012 and the 18th of March 2012. After the 12 targets for the WFAL score, you can go round again!
Keep an eye on the YAA website for details.
Inspired Facilities
Sport England have started a process to distribute £50m over 5 years to improve facilities.
inspiredfacilities.sportengland.org
The application process has been simplified compared to previous grant processes and there is also a catalogue of options to choose from including modular buildings all costed out including professional fees.
The first round of funding has already closed but the next one starts in February 2012.
Any club which owns their own facilities or has a long term (7 years plus) lease should look at this programme to improve their facilities. This is a capital grant programme and is for grounds and buildings, although kit might be added as part of a bigger project.
It is important to include in the bid a view of how this will increase participation, particularly in the post 16 age groups, as this is a priority for Sport England at the moment. Local council Sport Development officers and County Sport Partnerships are aware of the programme and should be able to offer advice and help with bids. This is a national programme and there is no regional allocation so the quality of the bid will determine the outcome.
Remember the aim is to improve facilities and therefore increase participation. Lets get some of this money coming to archery and in Yorkshire.

Two new county coaches
The YAA has two new county coaches. Ian Foster of Barnsley Archery Club and Bill Spencer of St George's Archery Club passed their assessments at Lilleshall on the weekend of the 13th and 14th of August 2011.
Congratulations to Bill and Ian on this achievement!

Kath appointed to new Northern Academy
Kath Fitzpatrick will be Technical Coach for Talent Confirmation at the new Northern Academy as well as working with Olympic Development at Lilleshall.
The Academy is a new concept, working with coaching for 14-19 year olds to feed into the Olympic Development programme. The Academy will be based in the north-west of England in a purpose-built sports facility also used by other Olympic disciplines. Eventually there will also be a talent identification strand for 8-12 year olds to be developed by Norman Suchorzewski of Pendle & Samlesbury.
Junior recurve archers selected for this have been identified with two YAA archers - Michael Smith and Blain Nicholson from Archers of East Riding - attending, although their first training camp will be at Lilleshall in November.
Kath and Andy appointed Olympic Technical Coaches
Kath Fitzpatrick and Andy Arnold have been appointed Olympic Development Technical Coaches by Archery GB, alongside Michael Peart and Steve Nicholson.
Working closely with Olympic head coach Lloyd Brown, they will assist with the delivery of the technical element of the Olympic Development training camps at Lilleshall National Sports Centre.
Congratulations to Kath and Andy on this recognition of their abilities, and best wishes to them for success in their roles!

YAA Squads 2011-12
YAA Coaching is having to introduce an archer contribution cost for the first time since the squads started in 1992. As many of you may know, the squads were originally funded as part of the GNAS coaching grant, which disappeared around 9 years ago; since then the coaches have raised funds to pay the costs, or used any profits from other activities to contribute. Recently they have been fully funded through the efforts of the coaches, albeit a declining and somewhat small group, who for the past 4 years have run the refreshments at the county tournaments at Wetherby. For various reasons we are no longer able to do that. This had raised over half of the money needed, and coaches also took on coaching clinics to raise further funds.
With rising costs and reduced income we have had to take two steps:
- limit numbers of coaches attending who receive travel expenses to three plus coordinator per squad.
- ask attending archers to contribute.
This was discussed at the coaching group and again at YAA committee and was not a decision taken lightly. YAA has given us a grant towards costs, and we plan one coaching clinic as well but the deficit means that, with similar numbers attending to last year, we would be asking squad archers to contribute £10 per session towards costs. We will continue to provide all refreshments and handouts printed for you, this is mainly to help cover venue costs and travel costs - it works out at around £2 per hour which we feel is good value - and we intend to make sure you agree with us by providing you with a quality service.
As a comparison Lancashire squads are around £8 per session, and in other regions all counties have charges - these vary from £5 - £20.
If you are interested in attending squads, the criteria for attendance and application forms are now available on the YAA website, or by email from me, and the dates and costs are also now available. Current members need only respond to the email sent asking them if they wish to continue.

NCAS Intercounties Juniors match, 1st October 2011
On a very unusually warm October day, Yorkshire Juniors had an excellent day in Manchester at the ground of Assheton Bowmen.
A full complement of 15 archers took part in the Intercounties Championships.
Yorkshire juniors came first in 4 of the possible 6 categories, with the boys coming first in the Recurve, Compound and Longbow categories, whilst the girls came first in the Compound categories.
An excellent team effort by all who took part. Many of the archers were shooting new rounds and many PBs were shot.
We desperately need girl recurve archers, so if you are reading this and want to shoot for Yorkshire, let us know.

NCAS Intercounties Seniors match, 2nd October 2011
Yorkshire's senior team emulated the successes of the juniors at the Intercounties match, which was held on the 2nd of October at the ground of Assheton Bowmen in Manchester.
The Ladies Compound team of Amanda Bartram, Gemma Breese and Gayle Cogan won their category. The Recurve teams won the Guss Moses Horn. And Izabela Modras achieved her third Master Bowman score. Izabela was one of several YAA archers who shot personal bests and season's bests.
Well done to all the Yorkshire team members!

Shooting achievements
Amy Oliver of Dearne Valley Archery Club won bronze in the finals of the Archery GB National Series in September. She finished second in the ranking round to Naomi Folkard. She won through the eliminations to meet third-placed Alison Williamson in the semi finals. Williamson won, and went on to claim silver in the final match against Charlotte Burgess.
Amy faced Naomi Folkard in the bronze medal match. Naomi won the first end by 28-25, but Amy won the next three by 27-25, 26-25 and 28-27, giving her bronze.
Michelle Kiddy of Dearne Valley Archery Club won European silver as part of the Great Britain Ladies team at the European Field Archery Championships in Montevachi, Italy. GBR beat Germany in the quarter finals by 98 points to 93, then overcame the Netherlands in the semi finals by 44 points to 34. They met hosts Italy in the final. The home team won this match, unfortunately! But GBR have every reason to be happy with a well-won silver.
Danielle Brown and Sarah Beamish have won an impressive array of gold and silver medals at the Paralympic World Ranking event in Nymburk in the Czech Republic.
Dani and Sarah faced each other in the individual Ladies Compound final, after they cut through the elimination rounds in fine style. Dani won this showdown.
They teamed up with Pippa Britton to win gold in the Ladies Compound team final.
Dani teamed up with John Stubbs to win gold in the Mixed Compound team final.
Their performances were part of a very impressive performance by the Great Britain squad, which won eight golds, three silvers and two bronzes.
Georgina Brown and Mark Farrow performed extremely well at the British Target Championships 2011 on the 13th and 14th of August.
Mark, of the Company of Scorton Archers, finished fourth in the Gents Recurve category. He shot Gents FITA scores of 1287 on Saturday and 1267 on Sunday, giving a total for the Double Gents FITA of 2554. This is a new Yorkshire record. Mark was also part of the victorious England Recurve team.
Georgie finished fourth in the Ladies Compound category. She shot 1365 on Saturday and and 1375 on Sunday, making 2740 for the Double Ladies FITA.
Amanda Bartram, Gayle Cogan, Richard Seekins and Paul Jones have each achieved Master Bowman for the first time.
Paul, of Wolds Archers, gained his third score at the Grand Northern Archery Meeting in Eccles. Paul's always been seen as one of the county's best archers, but it's actually taken him 15 years to crack MB. He expresses his thanks to Martin Holtby and all the coaches at the county squad for all the help and support over the last few years.
Richard, of Nova Bowmen, shot the required third score at the Cheshire weekend in August. In addition, he has achieved his 1200 Rose and 1300 FITA Star. Richard says: "This is down to my coach Andy Arnold, with help from Martin Holtby too, and Aardvark Archery, my club team mates at Nova Bowmen (especially Gayle Cogan) and lots and lots of people I have pestered the life out for help and tips etc."
Amanda of Selby Archers and Gayle of Nova Bowmen achieved their third Master Bowman scores at Abbeydale's shoot on the 21st of August. Gayle's score was somewhat nerve-wracking, going right down to the last arrow. She dug deep and drew on the good support she's had from fellow archers this year. She says: "I would like to thank my coach Andy Arnold for all his help and patience and also my fellow archers for all their support".

The Yorkshire Award
THE YORKSHIRE AWARD is a prestigious award where clubs can nominate individuals or couples who, in the eyes of their club, deserve recognition for services to that particular club.
There is no set deadline for submission of nominations.
If you think someone in your club deserves such recognition, please download the nomination form from the website, complete it, and send it to the county secretary.
Yorkshire Award Nomination and Citation Form
Judges expenses form
The Judges Confirmation and Expense Form was designed following comments made by a number of judges.
The tournament organiser or club secretary should send the form to the judge well in advance of the event. The judge should return the confirmation of attendance and expected expenses, so matters can be settled in advance of the event.
To prevent double booking of Judges, the Judges Confirmation and Expense Form includes a tear off slip to send to Karen Winsett, the Judges Liaison Officer, when the booking has been confirmed. The form can be downloaded as a Word document from the YAA website:

Alternatively, write to the County Secretary or phone him for a copy.
If you want particular judges, please write their names on the slip that is to be sent to Karen.
Many thanks for your anticipated support.
