Adel indoor cancelled, but AIUK Ironman on

Nick Beeson - 22 November 2010

Sadly, because of venue and date issues, the Bowmen of Adel indoor will not be held in 2011 (building closed, and central heating turned off, on January 2nd). Because of the crowded calendar, we do not think it is practicable to postpone it till later in the year.

However, Adel are hosting a round of the AIUK "Ironman" (open to any member of Archery Interchange UK who is a GNAS member) at their ground on December 28th at 11am. Usual hospitality applies.

Field archery rule change

Andrew Rees - 7 November 2010

WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT

Following an incident at a recent field shoot, the practice of leaving a bow propped against a target whilst searching for arrows will stop forthwith.

Henceforth, when it is necessary to search for arrows behind the boss, one member of the shooting group must stay visible in front of the target to ensure that following groups do not shoot until all archers are clear of the target.

A formal rule confirming this guidance will be published in due course.

2010-2011 GNAS Affiliations

Dave Phillips - 19 October 2010

To all YAA Archers

HAVE YOU RECEIVED YOUR GNAS MEMBERSHIP CARD?

The GNAS/NCAS/YAA affiliations were due on 30th September 2010.

The GNAS laws state:

"15. (a) All subscriptions shall become due on 1st October.
(b) A club whose Members have not paid the appropriate subscription by 31st October in any year shall cease to be an Associated Club and shall not be eligible for re-admission as an Associated Club before 1st October in the succeeding year."

With the changes to the Membership system, introduced by GNAS for this year, clubs now have to send their GNAS Affiliation Fees direct to GNAS, and their YAA/NCAS Affiliation Fees direct to YAA. GNAS then sends the Membership Card to the members' home address, rather than to the Club Secretary.

As of 19th October, we still have 14 YAA Clubs who have not submitted their affiliations to YAA, and we believe not submitted their fees to GNAS either.

If your club is one of these 14 (not being listed at this time) clubs, your GNAS membership may be in question.

If you have not yet received your GNAS card, please ask your club officers if your club has sent off your fees.  If they have not, you may wish to urge them to do so!  There is expected to be approximately a 3 week turn around, from receipt of fees at GNAS to issue of card.  If your club sent the fees off before this, your card may have been lost and your club secretary may have to follow this up with GNAS.

Don't forget, you could be asked to show your card at any tournament. The card is the evidence you are a member.

CWG team silver for Amy

8 October 2010

Amy Oliver has gained her first Commonwealth Games medal, as part of the England team that today won silver. India took gold, aided by an extremely boisterous crowd that put the England archers under intense pressure.

England had earlier dispatched Canada in the quarter final by 208 points to 201.

In the final, England took the lead over favourites India, but dropped points on the last end as home advantage worked for India. India won by 207 points to 206.

Congratulations to Amy and her team mates from all at the YAA.

CWG team gold for Dani

7 October 2010

Danielle Brown has claimed her first medal of the Commonwealth Games, as part of the England Ladies Compound team that beat Canada to win gold.

Danielle Brown, Nicky Hunt and Nichola Simpson had earlier come from behind in the semi-final to beat Malaysia.

Canada took an early lead in the final, but England fought back hard. The victory was clinched when Nicky Hunt, needing an 8, held her nerve and shot a 10.

Congratulations to Dani and her team mates from all at the YAA.

Don Child

Ray Chaplin - 5 October 2010

It is with great sadness that Ebor Archers have to announce that Don Child, retired chairman of the club, passed away on 21st September 2010 aged 66 years, as a result of heart failure. Don's passion in archery was clout and on many occasions he assisted George Thorley in setting up the National, NCAS and Yorkshire Clouts. He was an accomplished clout archer with successes in all the above tournaments, and in many club events and even the Scottish open clout.

When the club resided at the Civil Service sports ground in York, Don sat on the Civil Service Committee and for many years he held the position of Treasurer. It was his influence that persuaded the Civil Service Committee to suspend the cricket section from using the cricket field for a weekend. This was so Ebor Archers could host the National Junior Target Championships in 1994. It took many years before the cricket section forgave him for that. His contribution to archery from behind the scenes was immeasurable.

Don was a retired Consultant Anaesthetist, and was the dearly loved husband of Anna, much loved father of Sarah and David, a cherished and respected father-in-law to Katy and Matthew and, an always proud grandfather of Daniel, Jamie, Bethany, Luke and Duncan. There was a memorable service at York Crematorium on Tuesday 5th October 2010 to see Don off.

Don will be greatly missed by all his friends at the club and archers throughout the country.

Shaun's Shoot

Patrick Morrow - 21 September 2010

As you know, Shaun Mullins was an archer who shot for a number of different archery organisations including: NFAS, Yorkshire Archery, AFAC and GNAS. He excelled in whichever competition he entered. His ability with his bow was only matched by his ability to leave an impression with all those he met or shot with.

We at Pride Park Archers (PPA), Shaun's NFAS club, are holding a memorial longbow shoot for Shaun on the 12th of December (10 AM prompt start), with all proceeds going to his son Connor. As Shaun had such a widespread influence on the world of archery we decided to open the shoot to all archery organisations. We would therefore like to invite entries from all of Shaun's friends and fellow competitors from across the various organisations to this longbow-only event.

The shoot will be run under NFAS rules and will be a 25 target mixed big game, 2D and 3D field archery course. Anyone who does not understand the scoring for this will be grouped with people who will explain it. The main aim of the day is to bring together a number of Shaun's friends and have a day to celebrate him, in a way he would enjoy. There will be a limit of 125 places available, so please contact Mark Haynes at PPA on 07510 146020 as soon as possible.

There will be hot drinks and food available to buy and mulled wine for non-drivers.

This event will be repeated annually and it would be great if people returned to celebrate Shaun's love of longbow archery again and again. With this in mind there will be a returnable trophy for the top score on the day. This will be available for ladies, gents and juniors/cubs.

N.B. We at Pride Park Archers have our own insurance, which covers us for up to 150 archers attending a competition. So even if you are not NFAS you are covered.

Cheers

Ann Shooter awarded the Yorkshire Sword

8 June 2010

Ann Shooter was awarded the Yorkshire Sword at the YAA Championships on Sunday the 6th of June.

Ann has contributed much to Yorkshire archery over a long period. She was a YAA committee member for many years, and organised the YAA Longbow Championships for nine years.

The citation reads:

In 2009 Ann worked tirelessly to keep the Yorkshire Longbow Championships alive after a disastrous 2008 when the shoot was rained off.
The shoot organisation started in early March by ensuring that a field was available, the Judges were applied for, and entry forms were ready. Nearly every weekend after, Ann was attending shoots in and out of the County encouraging archers to come to the Championships which this year had a record attendance. A shoot does not end there, as all the score sheets need to be checked and results sent out, along with the printing of the record book. This year, after 9 years, Ann has passed the Tournament over to another organiser knowing that it is now a thriving Yorkshire Longbow Tournament. But for Ann’s dedication to Yorkshire archery, we could have lost a Yorkshire tournament.

He has also just shot his 3rd Junior Bowman score of the year at the age of 8 years and 203 days.

Congratulations to Joe on these excellent achievements.

Rebate to clubs

Jim Routledge's funeral arrangements

11 May 2010

Jim Routledge's family has decided that his funeral is to be opened up to all who wish to attend.

Jim’s funeral will be held at Rawdon Crematorium, Leeds on Wednesday 19th at 1:45.

The family has requested that no flowers be sent; rather donations should made to Wheatfield Hospice at Headingley. Donations to the Hospice may also be made at the Crematorium.

There will be a celebration tea afterwards at the restaurant at Newmillerdam, Wakefield.

Alex, Jim's daughter, has mentioned that an avenue of Longbows would be appreciated at the Crematorium, so if you would like to support this, please bring along your longbow.

Thanks to Gill St Quintin and Dave Phillips for this information.

Jim Routledge

8 May 2010

It is with great sadness that we report the death earlier today of Jim Routledge, one of the YAA Vice Presidents.

Jim was well known to many archers as the proprietor of the archery shop Top Tox, which he founded in 1986. He was also a long-standing member of the county committee, and was a County Coach for many years.

Our condolences and deepest sympathies are extended to Jim’s family.

Mary Evans

Dave Phillips - 3 March 2010

It is with sadness that we have heard of the death, early in January, of Mary Evans.

Mary, along with her husband Phil, were long standing members of Abbeydale Archers and the YAA and NCAS Committees, until they moved away from the County in the late 1990s.

Mary & Phil started archery in 1962, and have both been associated with the YAA Committee continuously between 1970 (possibly even earlier) and 1994. Mary had served as a member on the General Committee, as YAA Secretary and for 12 years was the YAA Vice President.

Mary and Phil were jointly awarded the YAA Award of Merit in 1996 and were the first ever recipients of this award. Mary was awarded the Yorkshire Sword in 1982.

Mary also served with Phil on the NCAS Committee from at least 1972 until 1997. She held the positions of Secretary (twice), General Committee Member, and from 1986 as one of the NCAS Honorary Life Vice Presidents.

Together they were founder members of the Ascham Society, and were also members of the Royal Toxopholite Society.

Our condolences and deepest sympathies are extended to Mary’s husband Phil and all their family

Monica Thorley

Freddie Fairfield - 28 January 2010

Monica Thorley, the wife of the late George Thorley, died on the 25th January 2010. Both George and Monica dedicated themselves to archery and served the sport in coaching, administration and in George's case as a respected bowyer. Monica served as Treasurer of the Burton Constable Company of Bowmen for over twenty five years alongside George, who was the Secretary. For many years both were actively involved with the YAA Committee and Monica kept a keen eye on the paperwork that is involved in committee and administrative positions.

For over twenty years the GNAS National Flight Championships and the Yorkshire Northern Flight Championships along with the GNAS National Clout Championships were looked after by the Thorleys, George organising and Monica looking after the paperwork.

Looking through my paperwork of the Flight results during the 1970's, I find that Monica was on numerous occasions the Ladies Flight Champion at County, Regional and National level and when she didn't come first she was usually in second place. A new record for the ladies was established at the National Championships in 1975 when Monica shot a distance of 426yds 2ft 5inches - this was beaten in 1979 by a much younger lady. During her time as a target archer Monica shot well with both a recurve bow and latterly a longbow until retiring from active shooting about fifteen years ago when arthritis in the wrists caused problems with her shooting.

Monica is survived by her son Alan and daughter Allison and their families.

Rachael Smith selected for GB squad

Kath Fitzpatrick - 14 January 2010

Congratulations to Rachael Smith of Barnsley (compound) who joins the GB Junior Archery Squad this month. Good luck to Rachael who, again, has been a stalwart of the county youth squads and who now trains with the senior squad to raise her performance further.

Rachael is the 15th YAA junior selected for national squad having come through the YAA squad system.

Just for interest, here is the roll of honour.

In the period 1991-2000:
 Jason Wright
 Marcus Firmin
 Sarah Jane Wright
 Andrew Stones
 Peter Hunt (field squad)
 Eddie Humphrey
 Salli Warnes
 Lisa Norfolk
 Kris Jackson
 Nick Everitt

In the period 2003-10:
 Matthew Arnold
 Nicole Allan
 Danielle Brown (paralympic)
 Georgie Brown
 Rachael Smith

In addition, seniors involved in the squads who went on to be selected for GB squad include:
Linda Garner (one of the early junior squad coaches)
 Sarah Beamish (paralympic)

Of course, not all YAA archers performing at elite levels have had county squad involvement (Amy, Michelle, Linda & Neil Oliver, Chris Parkin to name a few), but it's not a bad record, and we are delighted with this latest addition.

Kath Fitzpatrick
County Coaching Officer

Ted Mallett

Bill Spencer - 5 January 2010

It is with great sadness and regret that we have to report the death of our club President Mr Ted Mallett on Saturday the 2nd of January following a lengthy illness.

Ted had been involved in archery since 1972 when he joined Ebor Archers, the Civil Service Club in York, where he shot until 1977. He then joined the Glaxo Club after moving to Barnard Castle with his work. In 1980 when Ted and family moved to Harrogate he became a member of St George's. In his time with us he served the club in several different capacities as a committee member as well as always taking a keen interest in County, Regional and National matters. From 1994 to 2000 Ted was the Flight and Clout Representative on the Yorkshire Archery Association and the Northern Counties Archery Society Committees. He also organised the National Flight and Clout Championships for 5 years.

In 1995 he was asked by the President of FITA to chair a committee to review the rules of Flight Archery along with Ike Hancock of America and Lance Goodall of the Bowmen of Adel. The subsequently updated rules, which included recognition of the English Longbow and the American Flat Bow, were presented to, accepted and passed at the 1997 FITA Congress.

In 1999 Ted was awarded the Yorkshire Sword for his services to archery in promoting Flight and Clout shooting. He also played a part in introducing the Tassel Award Scheme for clout - the idea was conceived and developed by Ray Chaplin of Ebor Archers who asked Ted as County and Regional Representative to take it through Committee. Having seen the scheme accepted he was initially responsible for administering it, starting it on the road to the great success it is today.

Ted's main achievements were in Flight Archery where he was the winner of 14 British Flight titles and records, winner of 6 Northern Counties Flight titles and records and winner of 16 various Yorkshire Flight titles and records. Perhaps his crowning achievement was in 1984 when he shot in the United States Flight Championships in California and won the 25kg Flight Class with a distance of 940 yds 1 ft 10 in. which was verified as a World Record shot by an amateur.

During his time with St George's, Ted was always approachable and friendly, always ready to help and encourage and constantly had the wellbeing of the club and its members at heart. Throughout his illness he maintained his interest in archery and was the ideal candidate for Club President. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him, even those whose feathers he ruffled from time to time for he always spoke his mind.

Our condolences and deepest sympathies are extended to Ted's wife Rita and his family.

Dearne Valley Easter Weekend 2010 rescheduled

Albert Kiddy - 2 January 2010

It is with regret that Dearne Valley Archery Club must announce that this year's Easter shoot will not take place on the advertised dates, 4th and 5th April 2010, and will be rescheduled to 4th and 5th September 2010 (Saturday and Sunday).

Due to circumstances beyond our control it is no longer viable for the club to shoot at our current venue, High Melton College, Doncaster.

Another venue has already been identified. However, there is not sufficient time before Easter to complete a new course.

The DVAC Easter shoot will continue as normal in 2011.

Dearne Valley Archery Club would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused due to this change, and thank everyone for your continued support.

Albert Kiddy
Chairman, Dearne Valley Archery Club

(Note from the YAA: this will affect the YAA Field Championships, which for the last few years have taken place on the Saturday following the DVAC Easter Weekend. The Field Championships 2010 will now take place on Saturday the 23rd of October.)
